Senior pictures are due on Friday, October 1.

If you or your photographer wants to send in the pictures via email, please send them to yearbook@bhs.cc. If you do not get a confirmation email within one school day, please call 763-682-8162.

Photos are accepted via email, on disc, or as photographs.

Please see the information below for more details.

Can’t find your question here? Contact Ryan McCallum at mccallum@bhs.cc

Q. When are senior pictures due?
A. Senior pictures must be at the school by Friday, October 1, 2010.

Q. How do I get my pictures to you?
A. We prefer that you have your photographer mail us your portrait; however, you can either bring your pictures to the front office by Friday, October 1, 2010, or send it to the address below.

Tatanka Yearbook
C/o Buffalo High School
877 Bison Blvd
Buffalo MN 55313

Q. Can I email you a portrait or send it in on CD?
A. Images that are above 5 megapixel and saved at 300 dpi or higher may be emailed to yearbook@bhs.cc or submitted on a disc to the address listed above. If you do not receive a confirmation email within one school day, please call 763.682.8162 to address any issues with sending the picture.

Q. What are the specifications for senior pictures?
A. We have specific requirements for our pictures in order to maintain a consistent and quality yearbook. These specifications are in place to make sure that all seniors look good. Any picture that does not meet these requirements can be rejected by the staff. You will be contacted in this situation. Our specifications are as follows:

The picture should be wallet sized or larger

The head size should be approximately 1 and 1/4 inch from the top of the head to the chin on a wallet-sized picture.

All pictures will be in color.

No props can be used — including sports equipment, pets, cars, etc.

No hands should be near or on the face.

Use a plain, solid background — please no flags or heavy foliage

If you are using a digital photo, please develop it before submitting. We only accept pictures taken with a 5 megapixel or higher digital camera and developed professionally. Developed digital photos that do not meet our specifications will be returned.

Q. Where would you recommend students go for their pictures?
A. Check out our list of recommended photographers. These places have a history of taking good-looking pictures that meet our standards and are delivered on time.

Q. Can I use a “Lifetouch” photo (regular school photo taken on picture day)?
A. YES! Lifetouch photos have been used with great results in the past. However, you must submit the photo you want used or have your student sign a sheet consenting to its use. We do not automatically receive or print Lifetouch prints for seniors who do not submit senior photos. Be sure to order at least one picture if you wish to submit one.

Q. Can I (or a friend) take a photo for someone else using my own equipment?
A. Yes. As long as the photo meets the above requirements, we will run it. We’ve had pictures taken with regular 35mm cameras and digital SLRs that look great… even next to professional portraits. However, please be advised that pictures taken this way are often rejected for not meeting the quality standards above. Professional portraits usually meet our standards. It’s best to take several different shots and submit multiple pictures in order to have your photo accepted.

Q. What are some low-cost or quick options for portraits?
A. Portrait studios such as Sears and Wal-Mart, while they may not offer the variety of poses or personalization of professional portrait studios, can take low-cost pictures that have a quick turnaround if you are still waiting for your photos, planning on taking portraits at the end of the year, or are not planning on getting a package from a local professional photographer. These photos often look equally good when compared to other portraits.

Q. Why do you have so many standards?
A. The Tatanka has high standards for senior pictures for multiple reasons. The first reason is that we want you to look good. Over the past few years, we’ve seen thousands of senior portraits, and we know what works and what doesn’t once your pictures are cropped and placed in the book next to other pictures. Other yearbooks with loose standards often end up embarrassing students by allowing certain photos to run. The second reason is that the Tatanka is a nationally-recognized standard of excellence in yearbooks, and we want to keep it that way by printing a beautiful senior section with portraits that look good. These standards are made with your benefit in mind. If you have any further questions, please contact us.

Q. When will we be getting Baby Ad information?
A. FULL COLOR Baby ads can be purchased for $40 and will be due on Friday, November 12, 2010. Information about Baby Ads will be sent to you on the Senior Picture deadline day. Check here later for more information.

Senior pictures are due Friday, October 1, 2010

Senior Photo Specifications for the 2011 Yearbook

• All photos must be in full color – No black and white.
• Head and shoulder shots only – no hands showing on face. If hands are showing on your face, you picture may be rejected. This is to prevent you from looking awkward in a row of photographs.
• Plain, solid color background – a dark background is preferred.
• No props! – No pictures with sports accessories, cars, pets, or any other props will be accepted; this includes background “shades”, foliage, sparkles, etc.
• Head size – 1 ¼ inch (on a wallet-size picture) from top of the head to the bottom of the chin.
• No Hats, bandanas, etc – Male or female
• No Glamour Shots – we do not recommend Glamour Shots for senior photos because of past experiences with incorrect head sizes and specifications.
• No digital photos – Due to past incompatibilities with image quality, the Tatanka will not accept digital photos under any circumstance. High resolution (5 mega pixel our higher) digital photographs, once developed on photo-quality paper, may be accepted if done professionally.
• Wallet size is preferred.

Welcome to Publications Writing!

Here are some of the notes and handouts from today.

Course Description and Outline

Tatanka K-W-L.

Writer Information Sheet

Due tomorrow:

1. Your Summer Yearbook assignment.

If you want to see examples of this assignment from students from previous years, take a look at the following links. Keep in mind that these are one of many right ways to do this assignment. Yours can and should be unique and fit your writing style.

Sample 1

Sample 2

Sample 3

Sample 4

***

As a class, we focused on the concept of theme today.

Publications Writing Notes: Day 1 – Theme

You took a look at a variety of books from around the state and country; public schools, private schools, middle schools, and high schools. The books had different standards of quality, but they all had one thing in common: Theme. You broke down the theme and presented it to the class. Your knowledge went toward helping you think about the homework for tonight.

Loading…

Wednesday

The first thing we did today was sign up for four deadlines worth of stories. You’ll be assigned all your stories by tomorrow at the latest. I’m hoping to be able to post the stories tonight.

We then workshopped your Summer Yearbook Theme assignments aloud in small groups. We read aloud frequently in this class, and there will never be an opportunity to “pass” on reading. Each small group will pick one member to read aloud to the entire class.

Once everyone has read, you will be working on creating a front and back cover for your Summer Yearbook. You will be graded on creativity, clarity, and the ability to portray the theme in an appropriate, attractive way. Your cover should reflect the theme of your book clearly. You will need to finish your cover by the middle of the block tomorrow.

Take a look at these examples from last year.

If we had time, we got in to small groups with editors and working on getting your questions from our KWL sheet answered.

Your homework for tonight is to fill out the GWEN sheet that was in your Deadline Folder.

Tuesday

Welcome to Journalism!

This can be a demanding, difficult class, but I really believe it will be the most fun you’ll have with a class all year.

Don’t forget your 10 interview questions and your message board registration for tomorrow.

Handouts from Day One.

Journalism Syllabus.

Staff Contract.

Writer Information Sheet.

Notes from Day 1

Interview Notes – We looked at Background Research and Personal Interviews today.

Stuff to do this week:

1. Bring in your signed Staff Contract.

2. Sign up for an account on the Message Board. Do not use your full name in your account. Customize your profile and then get posting! You’ll need to make 50 posts on the forum each term. That’s about one per day. About 30 will be taken care of with regular assignments, but the other 20 are up to you to make.

3. Bring your class materials – a notebook, (you’re going to want a large, empty one), a folder.

Wednesday

Welcome back to journalism!

Due today:

10 interview questions.

Registered for a message board account

After viewing some important reminders about how to do interviews, you had time to complete an interview with your partner today.

We will spend about 30 minutes of class doing interviews. You will get about 15 minutes to interview your partner using the interview questions you prepared for homework. Be sure to ask follow up questions to get full stories and to take plenty of good notes. You should leave your interviews with about 5 paragraph-long quotes. More is always better.

After you interview, take time to fully write out your longest quotes. They should be written word-for-word as your partner said them. You can type or handwrite these quotes.

Due Tomorrow:
A 300-400 word story about your partner. The majority of your grade is made up of how well you present your angle and how good your quotes are. You will be expected to write in Lead-Transition-Quote style, but that will not be a large factor in your grade. Make sure you focus on the correct aspects of this assignment.

Your story will be written in Lead-Transition-Quote format. Here are the notes we took on Lead Transition Quote Format.

This assignment can be handwritten or typed, but it is due at the start of the hour tomorrow.

If you want help with writing in Lead-Transition-Quote format, check out this guide. If you want, you can write your story right on the guide sheet!

If you missed the notes today, want to read the sample story, or if you need clarification, download the Lead Transition Quote Overheads or The Smart Board presentation on Lead Transition Quote Format (both include asample story).

If you get stuck, check out this Sample 1st day assignment from last semester.

For a full project description, download this, or click “Read More” at the end of the post.

Due Tomorrow:

Write a 300-350 word story about the person you interviewed. The two things you are bing graded on are:

Angle – Your story must have a clear angle. You will focus on only a few key pieces of information about the person you are writing about. You don’t want to try to tell their whole story. Stories that have a unique angle presented in the first one or two paragraphs and carried throughout their story will receive full points.

Quotes – Your story must contain unique, story-telling quotes from your subject. Your quotes should be lengthy and contain evidence of a good interview. Make sure you write down what your subject says word-for-word during your interview and use those quotes in your story.

Your story can be typed or handwritten. It will be due at the start of class tomorrow.

Thursday

Bring your stories that you wrote about your partner. You’ll be sharing them today.

During the first part of the hour, you’ll be getting together with the person you wrote about and another pair of students. You’ll read your story out loud to the group and then listen and critique other stories that are read aloud in your group. After that, one person from your group will share their story with the class.

The reason we read stories aloud in this class is to get used to accountability in your writing. You need to get used to other people reading and reacting to your writing because you’ll be putting your writing out for everyone in the school to read very soon. If you are embarrassed about your writing, that’s a sign that you could have done better. Work to a level where you would be confident with anyone reading what you wrote.

After that, we did a community builder called “I know someone who…” where you got to meet some of your classmates and learn some really interesting things about each other.

Due tomorrow:Bring in two ideas for each section of the paper. The sections are as follows:

1. News
2. Sports
3. Features
4. Opinions
5. Arts and Entertainment

You should have at least ten ideas written down and ready by the time you walk in the door tomorrow. We had about seven minutes at the end of the block to discuss ideas and begin making a list.

Friday

We began the day by making a GIANT list of potential story assignments on the whiteboard. We came up with over 100 potential ideas.

This weekend, you need to sign up for the four stories you’d like to write about the most. You must sign up for your four choices by Saturday night at Midnight. I’ll assign stories by the end of the day on Sunday.

Sign up here.

Please follow the instructions in the sign up topic carefully.

Make sure you’re signed in and click “Reply.” Leave a post with:

Your first name an last initial.

The three or four stories you want to write about the most.

Why you’d be great at writing about your story.

If you want to work as a team with another students and who that student would be.

Next, we read the introduction Focus on Reporting as a whole class. If you missed today, you need to read the entire chapter, because we’ll be taking a short quiz on Monday at the start of class.

After we read the introduction, we divided in 12 groups. Each group was assigned a concept from the chapter to read, study, summarize, and illustrate. After that, each group presented their summary and illustration to the class.

The concepts you need to understand for Monday are:

Theme

Research

Angle

Focus

Order

Transition

Clarity

Accuracy

Word Choice

Description

Interpretation

Unity

Come back for examples from this year’s class.

Examples from last year’s Block 2 class.

We started the hour by talking about how to Engage Learners by designing interactions.

After that, we talked about when things would be due and how things would be graded.

Tuesday

While we shipped The Hoofprint, you had time to work and prep for your Final Project.

Wednesday

Today’s agenda:

1. The Wednesday group should publish today, and Francie too.

2. Your blog is due Sunday, so get to work finding a story. If you record the story and want help uploading it, I’ll be happy to help on Monday.

3. You need to start getting an outline of your final project. The document for doing this is online.

Make a copy of this document for each concept you signed up for.

Begin working on your concept sheet on Google Docs. The concept sheet should be done by Friday. You don’t have to have your things made by Friday, but the concept sheet should be done.

Thursday

I’m gone doing Technology today all day. Mrs. Tierney is your sub. She’ll help you design great stuff for J1.

Thursday group, Publish Today!

Don’t forget your blog!

Friday

Your concept outline Google Doc should be done by the end of the block. It will give you a clear outline of what you need to do next week. I’ll leave feedback over the weekend, so be sure it’s back in the J2 Folder in Google Docs.

Your Blog is due on Sunday.

Monday:

We’re back to our “normal” schedule. There’s a new blog on J2 Blogs that’s due this Sunday. You will be publishing in your new groups.

We started today by looking at some items in the news about the news. These things should help with your blogs for the week.

Google develops a formula that will decide what news you see

YouTube has officially broken the barrier of 24-hours of video being uploaded every minute.

The effect Citizen Journalism has and will have on our culture.

After looking at these three items, you had work time for two things:

Review the feedback that you received on your second draft of your story. Make changes and make a final draft by Wednesday at the end of the block. This is a major assignment.

Finish and polish your secondary coverage or quick read that goes with your Ideal School Story.

Tuesday

You had today to work toward finishing all your assignments for the week. Your layout and story are due by the end of class tomorrow.

Wednesday

Due by the end of the hour today:

Your story should be FINAL. The editors are putting the paper together tonight, and your story should be 100% final and ready to go.

You should make a blog post that includes your secondary coverage idea as a.jpg file and write a brief reflection on both your story and your layout. The reflection can be done from home, but your picture should be online and your story needs to be final. We will move on tomorrow.

If you’re done, take time to work on Hoofprint.net or your blog.

Thursday

Reminders:

Stories are in, blogs should be done. Grades are happening today, tomorrow, and this weekend.

No Hoofprint.net story was published yesterday.

Two stories should be published today.

Your blog will be graded A, B or Incomplete. Any blog that doesn’t include evidence of Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, and Original Thought will be Incomplete.

We started the day talking about Blog ideas, and we watched a really interesting Interview from the Colbert Report that illustrated the concept of the Wise Fool we blogged about perfectly and also showed the story behind the WikiLeaks story we looked at on Monday. It’s a fantastic Interview. Thanks, Alex, for mentioning it.

After that, we voted for what the final project of this class will be. After an original vote narrowing down six options to two, we had a final vote between re-imagining The Hoofprint as a magazine or making things for the Journalism 1 classes next year. The second option won.

Make your own poll voting question with Poll Everywhere

Tomorrow, we’ll start planning out how this project will work, who will work on different aspects of it, when it will be due and how/when it will be graded. The goal is to have a complete outline of the project by Tuesday of next week.

After that, you had work time.

Friday

We started the block by brainstorming the concepts from Journalism 1 that you felt were most important. The screen is embedded below.

Here’s the screen!

You guys came up with an OUTSTANDING list of concepts.

In good instructional design, a teacher picks a concept that they want students to attain first and then designs activities and interactions that lead a student toward attaining that concept. We’ll look at this method more in the upcoming days.

The list that you came up with is on this Google Doc. Use the document to sign up for what you want to do. Put your name or the name of the people in your group under the concept(s) you want to tackle.

The rest of the day is for you to use for blogging or Hoofprint.net.
