Term 1 – Day 40

DUE TODAY: Background Interviews
DUE BY SUNDAY: Photo orders on the calendar.

We started the day out with a Team Building activity involving marshmallows and toothpicks.

Next we read The Day the Yearbook Died and talked about what it means and how accurate it is.

Lastly, we split into groups of three and designed posters that got out the message about ordering yearbooks.

We’ll finish posters, export them, and put them on the message board on Monday.

Term 1 – Day 38

Yesterday, you just barely scratched the surface of your layout duplication process. You learned a lot about how to use a pica ruler, how to measure and draw out your design, and the basics of InDesign.

Today, you’ll learn some more advanced tools to use with your layout and have time to work toward completing either your or your partner’s layout.

Some InDesign tools we reviewed were;

1. saving and placing pictures,

2. rotating text and picture boxes.

3. additional text wrap options,

4. The Tips website, which has all these things AND MUCH MUCH MORE!!!

After that, you had time to work.

Term 1 – Day 38

Yesterday we made a lot of progress as a whole group on really improving our book.

Today, we’ve got to continue that.

Use your class time today to finish fixing your spread in any way possible. If you get finished, use your time to help others.

Don’t forget about your upcoming deadlines. Background research is due on Friday.

Term 1 – Day 37

Today, you got an introduction to the world of InDesign.

You really had to be here today to know what’s going on. But, I’ve included the SmartBoard presentation that introduces the assignment to give you some indication about what we did.

Introduction to Design – Layout Duplication

We picked out layouts to duplicate, sketched them, measured them, and learned the basics of recreating them using Adobe InDesign.

Pick a partner when you get back that can explain to you what we did.

Term 1 – Day 37

UPCOMING DEADLINE: Background Research and scheduling observations.

Today: You will be helping Dana track down seniors who don’t have senior pictures in. We really need to do this ASAP. Bring a notebook and a pen with you to get official responses from seniors and bring back the report so we know what’s going on.

Also, we have some major things to fix and re-write from First Deadline. We looked at a presentation with some not-so-great examples of stuff we’ve done thus far. Everyone has things to fix, including editors, so we worked on that for most of the hour. Also, each editor has a list of things that need to be changed on their spread. They’ll work with you on that today.

The sooner this is done, the faster we can move forward.

Term 1 – Day 36

We began the day by taking notes about the  Inverted Pyramid style of news writing.

After you took notes, we practiced the style with the Nursery Rhyme News practice writing assignment.

After we shared the stories, you practiced one final time by writing a third-person inverted pyramid story about an event that you expereinced recently. Those were turned in by the end of the block.

DUE TOMORROW: Bring in a magazine.

Term 1 – Day 36

Here’s today’s incredible agenda:

First, we reviewed the mini deadlines for 2nd Deadline. Deadline 2 – Mini deadlines – 2009 Book

Next, you got your Yearbook Deadline Evaluation. You had the majority of the block to fill it out. At the end of the block, make sure your folder is updated with everything from this deadline, including this evaluation.
